Come on in, the water’s fine! I’ve heard that one before. Usually from my kids right after they’ve jumped into an icy swimming pool, or waded into a mountain stream. Kids don’t need to think very long before jumping into something that looks like fun. I, on the other hand, am no longer a kid and I need time to deliberate before sticking my toe into that ice cold water. Except that’s the painful way to get in. I’ve learned that my kids have it right…. just jump on in. Yes, the water IS shockingly cold! But the pain is over with in a second (unless you’re my husband) and once I’m all the way in, I find the water is great and I’m ready to have fun.
So today, I’m going to jump right in to my new commitment to learn about writing. I hope to use this site as a place to practice my writing, to study what others have to say about becoming a great writer, and to read and share books, articles, and podcasts that I enjoy. I hope to make this a community where people who love to read and write can join me on my writing journey. Stories are meant to be shared, so I hope you’ll share some of your stories with me along the way.
Stephen King, in his book On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, encourages people to get writing by saying “you can, you should and if you’re brave enough to start, you will.” Ok, so after all that talk about diving right in, maybe I will start by just getting my toes wet with this blog. But I hope that it won’t take long before my courage is up and I can do a cannonball off the highest rock with the bravest of the bunch.
